CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Kaidan Alenko

CANON: Mass Effect

CANON POINT: after reboarding the Normandy during the final push to the Citadel beam

ARRIVAL TYPE: accidental

IC USERNAME: maj.alenko

HISTORY: wiki

Kaidan's history aligns perfectly with the other Mass Effect characters already in Clockbox with one exception — Shepard chose to save him and the Salarian squad on Virmire while Ashley died with the bomb.

PERSONALITY:

Kaidan: Let me tell you something that I've been thinking about. I'm not the kind of guy who's the life of the party, who has a lot of friends.
Shepard: Really?
Kaidan: No, it's true. I mean, some people even find my, uh, integrity annoying.
Shepard: Really?
Kaidan: No, seriously, I-- Okay, fine. Well, now you're messing with me.

‌• Moral. Integrity is very important for Kaidan. He's a by-the-books soldier, and he's very troubled by the idea of good people doing bad things. The possibility that an evil person could've been good once upsets him a lot. He always strives to do the right thing himself and when forced to do something that could be seen as questionably moral (such as shooting a corrupt councilor) he questions himself and feels guilty for a while after. He's a very good soldier though, as made evident by the fact that he was promoted to Major between games 2 and 3, and becomes the second human Spectre.

‌• Judgmental. If you are one of the aforementioned good people and happen to do a bad thing you better believe Kaidan's gonna judge ur ass. In Mass Effect 2 when Shepard pretty much has no choice but to team up with Cerberus, a known terrorist organization (and has no game dialogue to explain that she has no other choice), Kaidan is very cold even if he and Shepard had dated in the first game and despite the fact that Shepard has miraculously returned from the dead after two years. He remains distrustful of her through the first half of the third game despite definitive proof that she'd cut all ties with Cerberus.

‌• Reserved. He's one of the less outgoing members of Shepard's squad. To someone who doesn't know him well he might come across as quiet or even aloof because he's just not one to strike up a chat with someone he doesn't know well. Once you do get to know him though it's clear that he's smart and actually pretty friendly, with a wry sense of humor.

‌• Self-controlled. Part of the reason Kaidan is so reserved is because he's always practicing a keen sense of self-control. As a biotic there's a chance people will view him with fear and suspicion (the mages of mass effect) and he doesn't want to give them reason to. Equipped with the controversial L2 implant, Kaidan suffers severe migraines (not so bad considering the other risks include brain damage and death) but in exchange he's a powerful biotic, on par with the Asari. This is why self-control is so important to him. As a kid in training he tried to protect a girl he liked who had her arm broken by an asshole of an instructor. The instructor (an ex-military turian) pulled a knife on him and Kaidan retaliated by delivering a powerful biotic kick to his head. He snapped the turian's neck, killing him. The girl was scared of him after that and he resolved not to let himself lose control again.

• Romantically awkward. Despite being a by-the-books soldier he apparently has no concept of fraternization rules. In Mass Effect 1 he has a huge crush on Shepard and struggles to keep it a secret. He drops ~*~*~subtle~*~*~*~ hints that he likes her by saying things like "There's no reason why aliens wouldn't like you UM I MEAN HUMANITY ma'am" when Shepard talks about humans having concepts like love. He doesn't want to distract Shepard from their extremely important mission but he also can't stop dropping those ~*~*~subtle~*~*~ hints because he is in a bioware game and bioware romances are awk. If pressed he will admit that he has feelings for her but doesn't want to complicate the mission. By the third game he still has that massive crush and he's become bold enough to approach Shepard and outright tell her that he thinks they have a connection and he wants to date regardless of whether or not Shepard is already in a relationship with someone else. He's a romantic at heart though and once he's with someone the awkwardness dissipates. He's not shy about throwing the word love around, either.

• Canadian. The most important detail of all. He mentions it at least ten times in the third game and once in the first.

Kaidan: I can handle mingling.
EDI: You would be a popular choice for mingling, but it would be one which would unexpectedly lead to failure.
Kaidan: Excuse me?
EDI: You can sometimes be judgmental. It ruins the mood.
